Zero-Waste Pipeline: Procedural Grooming, Skinning & Baking for Games

Over the past six months, I developed a procedural pipeline in Houdini that solves one of the biggest pain points in game dev: creating high-quality grooming and hair cards without manual routine or strict UV limitations. The main goal of this setup is to cover both heavy cinematic needs and optimized real-time assets using the exact same workflow.

The system is fully attribute-driven, allowing you to update atlases, swap textures, and run visual color debugging directly in the viewport. To prevent fur and cards from looking repetitive or "tiled," the algorithm automatically randomizes card width and UV coordinates.

I placed special emphasis on auto-skinning. Weight transfer from the mesh and guides to the hair cards happens automatically via capture attributes, so there is no need for manual weight painting. Under stress tests, the system easily handles thousands of cards with real-time deformation.

I started this project because, as a groomer, I kept hitting technical limitations when working with furred characters. This entire setup combines my artistic experience with pipeline engineering to create a fast, practical tool with instant data transfer and simple FBX export for game engines. Everything happens inside Houdini without any third-party software, saving significant time and budget on exports.
